Peter Thomson.

Farewell to an admired  friend of the Marysville Golf Club, Victoria,  Australia.

Peter Thomson was a great supporter of the Marysville Golfing   Community following Black Saturday [07/02/2009].  He attended the re-opening of the course in May that year.

Peter told AAP at the re-opening,   “I am part of the grand fraternity of the 30 million golfers in the world who, when we hear of some club that has some trouble, we all pack up and come around to see if we can help,"

"So, that's why I'm here today."

He played nine holes with members and enjoyed the luncheon, which followed.

Peter and his wife, Mary, also attended the launch of the book, Marysville Community Golf and Bowls Club Inc.  Before and After Black Saturday, February 7, 2009, in which he wrote the book’s, Forward.  He spoke most graciously about the people of Marysville and the efforts made to recover from such a devastating onslaught of nature.  His support, and that of Mary, was most appreciated by us all.

Peter Thomson was a national treasure.  We miss him.

Golf Challenges

As many people would be aware, Marysville is a picturesque town just 90 minutes from Melbourne, half an hour from Healesville.  Following the 2009 fires, many Melbourne golf clubs, together with those from around Australia, were very supportive in helping our club get back on its feet.  However, as with all regional clubs, and particularly a community that is still in the process of rebuilding, we need ongoing support from people visiting us as green fee paying players.

We are keen to set up an annual “Challenge” with a few metropolitan clubs to share our course with others.  In the spirit of the challenge, we are putting up a beautiful wooden trophy for each challenge, which has been crafted by one of our local artisans, from locally sourced timber to evoke the beauty of the forests that surround our wonderful town.   We are looking forward to our next Challenge against the Tour Elephants at the end of April.

If you are interested in joining us for a challenge, please contact us via email at enquiries@marysvillegolfandbowls.com.au to pursue a further discussion and one of our committee members will contact you to discuss details so we can settle on a mutually convenient weekend for such a challenge.
